Insight Programmes

Insight Days

Opportunities for students to get to know a company or profession are often called spring weeks or insight days, they may last a week or more or just be a day. You may work on a project or shadow a staff member or be given a tour of the office or site depending on the length of the opportunity. They may occur in any vacation period or if it’s just a day it may be during term time.

Insight Events

There are vast amounts of insight events with many accessible online. Go to CareerConnect > Search > Events. Here you will find insight events ranging from the “Big Four” accounting firms, EY, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG, banks and finance, the legal sector, civil service, engineering and technology and many more!

RateMyPlacement Diversity & Inclusion Event

To level the playing field, we’re committed to helping students from less advantaged backgrounds access career opportunities with the UK’s best employers. You’ll get to ask them any questions you might have, hear about their personal experiences, and discover exactly how they are building a socially diverse workforce.

Women + Data Hackathon

The task is to analyse a global data set on the topic of sustainability, focusing analysis on questions such as ‘Why are some countries making more progress towards decarbonisation than others?’ Each participant is expected to work as part of a global team, each of which will be supported by a data professional who will mentor and facilitate the process

Meet with graduate recruiters offering a wide range of opportunities. Find out about roles that you may not have previously considered.

WX PR Winter Insight Programme (Paid)

WX Ignite is our paid winter insight programme to give you your first experience of the PR industry. It is designed specifically for young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who might not otherwise be able to access work experience opportunities within the industry.

  • Eligibility: attended a non-selective state school, be the first generation in your family to attend university or been eligible for free school meals.
  • Deadline: 14th Nov

RPC Virtual London Insight Day 2021

It’s the perfect opportunity to find out more about RPC before you submit your summer scheme or training contract application. If you have a genuine interest in a career in law and are a creative thinking with a desire to make a real difference, we want to hear from you.

  • Eligibility: open to students in their penultimate or final year studying law or final year of a non-law degree

This is an interactive event where you will be able to speak to alumni, who studied different degrees at UoM, and now work in the charity sector.

Media Club — Career Service

We have invited a number of guest speakers from across the specific sectors in Media to share their career journeys and offer advice and tips about how you can break into that sector, as well as things you can be doing at University to acquire relevant skills and experience to help you.

Internships

Internships are short periods of professional experience. Most internship opportunities advertised by large graduate recruiters are aimed at pre-final year students and many employers use them as a fast track onto their graduate programmes. However, many smaller businesses offer internship opportunities and will not stipulate your year of study.

Legal Intern — London Law Collective

It will consist of the completion of a variety of legal and operational tasks. These will include typical paralegal tasks, for example preparing first drafts of board minutes, assisting with filing of documents at Companies House, marking up documents, proof reading as well as researching and producing first drafts of reports on certain topics.

  • Eligibility: students that are in receipt of the full non-repayable financial grant from the UK government and/or a bursary or other form of support from the University of Manchester.

Capital One

You don’t need to be on a Computer Science degree course, but you’ll need to be able to code in any language and you must be in your penultimate year of university. We don’t expect you to be an accomplished developer — just enthusiastic and a quick learner.

You’ll learn how to interpret data and other insights to make the right decisions for our business and customers. Plus, you’ll influence, collaborate and present across the business, including to senior leaders.

Strategic Communication Summer Internship — Kekst

The work varies from media monitoring, new business research projects, drafting content for social media and press releases, tracking parliamentary debates and select committee hearings. We value if you have or are studying a degree in journalism, communication, business or equivalent relevant fields.

Student Experience Internships (SEI)

Student Experience Internships (SEI) — Frequently Asked Questions 2021

All SEI internships will be paid, full-time and last up to eight weeks across the summer vacation. Plus SEI interns will have access to an exclusive training and development workshop programme over the course of the summer. The SEI scheme is open to all undergraduate students not currently in their final year.

The University of Manchester hosts its own summer internship scheme within Schools and the Professional Services (eg, Careers, Business Engagement, Alumni, Student Marketing, Sports) undertaking student experience, Welcome Week or employability focused projects.

Eligibility for SEI you must be a pre-final year undergraduate i.e. in your first or second year of a three year course or your first, second or third year of a four year course.

Learning Through Research Internships

Learning Through Research internships are aimed at students wanting to explore what a PhD or academic career might look like. These involve working alongside an academic member of staff or other researcher, undertaking a very specific research project related to the academic’s expertise.

Eligibility for SEI Research you must be a pre-final year undergraduate i.e. in your first or second year of a three year course or your first, second or third year of a four year course.

Part-Time Jobs at The University of Manchester

Working at the University gives you the flexibility to prioritise your studies whilst also taking part in roles that will boost your CV. Generally roles at the University will be more understanding with commitments around assignments and exams and are paid at a better rate than other jobs. It’s also a good way to meet other students at the University and maybe make a friend or two.

JobShop Part-Time Jobs Fair — Student’s Union

JobShop at the Students’ Union are running their biannual part-time jobs fair on Thursday 11th November. Come along to meet some of Manchester’s best employers, including AO Arena, Barretts, The Tutor Trust and Manchester Central. All employers are offering part-time roles (under 20 hours) and paying National Living Wage.

Bars and Catering Assistant — Student’s Union (rolling)

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Bars and Catering teams here at the Students’ Union. We are looking for motivated and friendly people who are passionate about delivering great customer service. A large portion of your time will be spent working in a customer facing environment and ensuring your work space is clean and tidy. A typical shift would involve prolonged periods of standing and occasional light lifting. Shifts in the kitchen are predominantly back of house, where you will spend time preparing food for customers

Student Partner Interns (rolling)

This is a paid flexible role (£10.08p/h plus holiday) where you will be working 7 hours a week on projects across the University to improve Teaching and Learning and the Student Experience. You will be partnering with both Students and Staff, and will have the opportunity to take part in developmental activities (such as LEAP and Developmental Workshops) throughout your time with us.

University isn’t cheap, even with loans and grants, sometimes it’s not enough and we need to work to be able to cover costs. It’s important to manage your time effectively and not allow the work to affect your studies. We can also gain a lot of transferable skills from part-time work that are great talking points at interviews and demonstrates your determination.

We have found some opportunities that we feel work alongside your studies ranging from tutoring to catering.

Activity Leader at Science and Technology Activity Days

Would you be interested in working with secondary school students at some Science and Technology Activity Days? MCS Projects are looking for university students that could help to lead Emergency Medical Assistance, Medical Diagnostics, Robotics and E-FIT Forensics activities. £75 per day.

Summer School House Parent & Activities Leader

The role entails pastorally supporting our summer school students by supervising, accompanying and entertaining them throughout the Summer School’s activities and social programmes. The gross salary for the six-week period is £3,855 (£10 p/h)

Tutor Trust

Tutor Trust are an award-winning charity who deliver 1:1 and small group tutoring to children and young people across Greater Manchester working in schools to support those pupils who cannot access private tuition. Tutor Trust works in close partnership with the University of Manchester, with most tutors in Greater Manchester being UoM students.

FireTech — Tutor

Firetech is the UKs leading provider in tech education for children aged 8–17 years old. We have confirmed this summer we are running Remote AND In person camps in London! We are looking for STEM uni students to teach our awesome tech courses, from python, java, AI, digital music, creative digital design and more! Earn between £330 to £550 per week and all curriculum and training is provided. It is super flexible and you can fit it around your studies. This role is open to all students, UK/EU and students here on a tier 4 visa.

Volunteering

Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organisations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street — It can benefit you as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your skills. Stellify

You can be accredited for the volunteering you are doing through the Stellify Award, the University’s most prestigious extra-curricular award. To achieve the award you must complete three Ethical Grand Challenges, complete up to 25 hours of volunteering (this may increase when restrictions are lifted) and complete two leadership roles (PASS Leader, Peer Mentor, Student Rep, etc); the full list can be found here, Stellify — Step Up and Lead.
