Scholarships — Science and Engineering

We have found a list of available scholarships open to students studying within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. We have scholarships that are for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related courses as well as specific subject scholarships. Please be sure to check the eligibility criteria before applying.

STEM Scholarships

Scholarships that are applicable to students studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics related subjects.

Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards — £1,000

The University will be awarding the top 0.5% of undergraduate students graduating this year with an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Nominations made by Departments. For the Faculty of Science and Engineering only.

Cyber First Bursary — £4,000 a year

Open to UK nationals who achieve 3 A-levels at grade B or above and have an offer to study, or are currently in your first year of a STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering or Maths) degree at a UK university.

Proprep Scholarship — £5,000

If you are in your first or second year at university and you’re studying an undergraduate STEM degree then you are eligible to apply to receive a payment of £5,000 to support your studies. This will be paid to you next academic year and you will be required to complete a series of tasks in the academic year of 2021–22 to support and mentor first year STEM students.

Applications from students who are able to demonstrate they are from any of the following underrepresented groups will be prioritised:

  • You are of BAME origin
  • You identify as a woman
  • You are disabled or have a learning disability
  • You come from a low-income household

BP Achievement Awards — £1,000

Available to first and second year undergraduate students in the following discipline areas: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences (including Geology), Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics.

Students on relevant courses are invited to write a 1,000-word essay on a specific subject. There are up to three awards available per Department each year. Students are selected on the basis of their entry qualifications / first-year examination results, and the content of their application/essay.

BP STEM Scholarship — £3,000

Available to first-year undergraduate students in the following discipline areas: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences (including Geology), Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics and Astronomy.

Students on relevant courses are invited to apply to BP online (normally in November of their first year). Students are selected on the basis of their applications, online tests and an interview. The scholarship is renewable each year based on examination performance.

Royal Television Society Technology Bursary — £1,000 a year

Applicants must be either a current first year student or due to start your course in autumn at undergraduate, in Maths, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or related technological degrees.

Bursaries are available to students on one of the specified courses, who come from households with an income of less than £35,000 a year. You will be required to demonstrate your interest in a career in the television industry.

Young Woman Engineer of the Year — £2500

National Instruments Engineering Scholarship Programme — Award and paid internship

First-year undergraduate students studying Computer Science, Engineering or Physics. Find out more on the National Instruments Engineering website.

Whitworth Scholarship Awards — Annual bursary

UK/EU engineers can receive an annual bursary for full-time study on a BEng, MEng or MSc course in any Engineering discipline.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) — Up to £3,000 a year

Students in need of financial support who have applied to start an IET accredited MEng or BEng Engineering degree course and expect to achieve a minimum of three Bs at A level (or equivalent).

Engineering Leaders Scholarship — £5,000

Open to UK students currently undertaking an undergraduate degree in Engineering at a UK institution. Applicants must be in the 2nd year or beyond to apply. The awards look to support students who have the potential to become leaders in engineering and who are able to act as role models for future engineers.

First Year Undergraduate Scholarship — £3,000 for 2 years

The first year undergraduate scholarship is open to those registered on the first year of their Engineering Council accredited degree (majority of the Engineering courses) and making excellent progress, to the standard of 2:1 or above. Applicants must be a member of IGEM (Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers) at the time of applying for a scholarship.

WomenIn Scholarship — $2,500

Applicants to the WomenIn Scholarship must identify as women intending to pursue a career in any aspect of video games including: art, animation, programming, engineering, game direction, game design, sound design, law, marketing, and business administration. Must be a full-time undergraduate student or a graduate student attending an accredited college or university.

Power Academy Engineering Scholarships — IET membership and a bursary

BEng/MEng students with high grades studying Electrical and Power Engineering. Bursary includes a contribution towards tuition fees and books/software and professional development training

UK Electronics Skills Foundation — Various

UK/EU EEE students studying a BEng or MEng degree which contains a substantial amount of Electronics or Electronic Engineering. Successful candidates are matched with companies for scholarships that include bursaries, paid placements, mentoring and professional development training.

Computer Science

Amazon Future Engineer Bursary — £3,500 per year

For students from lower-income backgrounds, whose household income must be less than £25K. As well as receiving financial support, students benefit from mentoring and internship opportunities, helping them to take the first steps in pursuing a computer science career on one of the following courses: Computer Science and/or Mathematics.

Generation Google Scholarship — £7,000

Students who are studying Computer Science at any university in Europe at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. You must be able to demonstrate academic background, passion for increasing the involvement of women in computer science, and leadership skills. Applications are strongly encouraged from female students.

Google Europe Scholarship for students with disabilities — £7,000

For students with disabilities who are studying Computer Science at any university and who can demonstrate strong academic and leadership skills as well as a passion for computing and technology

(ISC)² Undergraduate Scholarship — $1,000 — $5,000

Must be pursuing, or plan to pursue, a degree with a focus on cybersecurity or information assurance (Computer Science).

(ISC)² Women’s Scholarship — $1,000 — $6,000

Scholarships to inspire women to join the ever-growing field of Information Security. Must be pursuing, or plan to pursue, a degree with a focus on cybersecurity or information assurance (Computer Science).
